Appendix Four
A GENEALOGICAL TREE
The genealogical tree shown below has "been constructed solely for the purposes of this history. Accordingly, irrelevant names are omitted and the arrangement does not enable the reader to judge the relative ages of "brothers and sisters, The persons who could not "be accommodated on the sheet were as follows:-
(1) Esther Sutherland of Langwell, Who was first
married to William Budge, uncle of William Budge, first
Provincial Grand Master of Caithness.
(2) Sir James Sinclair of Mey, later Earl of
Caithness who married Jane Campbell, sister of Patrick
Campbell of Barcaldine.
(3) Patrick Campbell of Barcaldine.
(4) Donald Home, one time Proxy Master.
In the tree members of 'the lodge are distinguished by having after the Christian, name reference letters and numbers by which they may be identified in the Roll of Members. Those who held office in the lodge have their names underlined and those who served as Master are shown in capital letters.
A surprisingly high proportion of those who held the principal offices in the lodge appear in this simple tree. It is most remarkable, however, that, with the exception of the founding Master, every Master of St.John's Lodge known to us is present in this tree. And Gordon was, of course, a "foreigner". Whether we should accuse Caithness of inbreeding or St.John's Lodge of nepotism will not be pursued.
